I was
digging through the closet last weekend and what stared me right in
the face as I got in there a little bit? It was my Sega CD, banished
from the living room since we moved into our new apartment. Now I knew
it would be a gamble trying to slip that in there as I had just added
a modded PSX to my living room arsenal but I decided to go for it
anyway (God help me when I try getting that Game cube and Saturn in
there). Much to my amazement and joy I met no resistance (resistance
is futile) I think this may be due to the fact I have gotten her
hooked on Dreamcast, M.A.M.E. and SSX for the PS2! Now that the Sega
CD/Genesis is in there, she is hooked on a game I got for $3 called
arrow flash.
OK, so this title is
one that is semi-legendary at least as far as you hear about Sega CD
games. I don’t play many RPGs (FF2 6 7 8 &9 and a few others) but I
figured since many of the Full Motion Video (yuk!!!!!!!!!!!!) games on
the Sega CD suck arse and there are only a few side scroller type
games (they could have done the best side scrollers ever on it but
they were retarded) I should start doing some Sega CD RPG games.
Although I knew that Lunar was supposed to be the best I popped in Vay
anyway.
Being my impatient
self, I got frustrated that on first run you cannot skip the intro.
I’m glad now that I took the time to watch it because the anime stuff
was pretty darn cool. The gameplay is pretty much what you would
expect from an RPG but this one has a special feature… you can hold
down a button and walk really really fast! Unfortunately monster
encounters happen every 5 seconds this way but it is a good way to
level up.
At this point I am
totally addicted to this game. One thing that makes it stand head and
shoulders above all the Genesis RPGs I ever played was the music. It
has a pretty cool soundtrack and there are lots of voice tracks during
the anime scenes. It keeps a good pace too and during those repetitive
monster battles you can just click the A.I. option and your people
just fight till the battle is over, they even heal and cure poison
without your aid.
The story line is
excellent and I wont give away major plot points but lets just say the
main hero is full of righteous indignation. There are many corny gags
like the wind fairy that transports you to an island by farting you
there, and if one of your characters has a face mask and the other two
don’t then they will go crazy from the stench and kill the one who
does… Hope you saved before you got there.
Another nice thing is
that as far as I can tell by how far I am already, in the days of 300
hour RPGs this one will only take about two weeks to beat (or maybe
one week if you are single and have no job)
Synopsis: This game
is killer, it might not have the best in game graphics like FF7 ect…
but it is well worth it for the cool Anime, Music and storyline,
besides its one of the best games ever made for Sega CD and you’ve got
to love putting one of those things to use!
